About West Valley City
Welcome to West Valley City, Utah
West Valley City is Utah's second-largest city, sitting west of the Jordan River in Salt Lake County. The city was formed in 1980 by the merger of four longtime farming communities — Hunter, Granger, Redwood, and Chesterfield — whose history traces back to 1848, when Joseph and Susanna Harker became the first Latter-day Saint settlers to cross the Jordan River into the area. The new city's finances were so shaky in its first year that the mayor and commissioners personally funded police operations until things stabilized — a rocky start for what's since grown into a city of well over 130,000 people. Today West Valley City is known for its diversity — more than 40% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino — and for commercial districts like Valley Fair Mall, the Decker Lake and Lake Park business parks, and Fairbourne Station. The Maverik Center, a 10,500-seat arena built in 1997, hosted Olympic ice hockey during the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Games. Granite School District serves the city through two comprehensive high schools, Hunter High and Granger High. Each year, the city hosts WestFest in June — its flagship celebration of West Valley City's founding and many cultures — plus SpringFest, a Thursday-evening summer farmers market at Centennial Park, and free Movies in the Park screenings.
