About Midvale
Welcome to Midvale, Utah
Midvale sits in the central Salt Lake Valley along the Jordan River, about a 20-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport. Founded in 1909 at what was then a rail junction called Bingham Junction, the city grew up around smelting: the Galena smelter was built near the Jordan River in 1873, and a major smelter completed by the United States Smelting, Refining, and Mining Company in 1902 processed copper and then lead for decades, at its peak handling up to 1,000 tons of ore a day. That industrial legacy required environmental cleanup — the Midvale Slag Superfund site remediation was completed in the 2000s. Today Midvale Main, the city's historic downtown arts and culture district, carries more than 50 murals alongside locally owned shops and restaurants — it was the city's original commercial heart from its 1909 founding. Bingham Junction, a mixed-use redevelopment near the former smelter site, has become a nationally recognized development initiative. Canyons School District serves the city through Hillcrest High School, home of the Huskies, Midvale's unambiguous public high school. Midvale's civic calendar includes the Los Muros on Main mural festival each June, Harvest Days Week each summer with block parties and fireworks, and Light Up Main Street each December.
