About Sandy

Welcome to Sandy, Utah

Sandy sits at the base of the Wasatch Mountains along the east bank of the Jordan River, with Little Cottonwood Canyon — and the Alta and Snowbird ski resorts beyond it — as its backyard. The city's official slogan, "Sandy: Heart of the Wasatch," reflects that setting. Permanent settlers arrived in the 1860s, and silver mining took off in the 1870s after the railroad reached town, turning the quiet farming village into a boomtown with three smelters, 17 saloons, and its own ZCMI co-op. Sandy incorporated in 1893 with a population just over 1,000; after the mining boom faded, the city returned to farming beets, alfalfa, and peaches for decades before a second growth boom took it from about 3,300 residents in 1960 to more than 75,000 by 1990. Today The Cairns is emerging as Sandy's second downtown, anchored by Rio Tinto Stadium — home to Real Salt Lake since 2008 — and the Hale Centre Theatre, an $80 million complex built in 2017. The original 19th-century townsite, Historic Sandy, still covers about one square mile and is the subject of a self-guided walking tour, and Dimple Dell Regional Park's 630 acres of urban wilderness stretch nearly the width of the city. Canyons School District serves Sandy through two comprehensive high schools, Jordan High and Alta High. Sandy hosts one of Salt Lake County's biggest Fourth of July celebrations each summer, the Sandy City Balloon Festival each August, and the Sandy Healing Field each September, when 3,031 American flags go up along the city's Promenade — one for every life lost on 9/11.
