Ogden is the seat of Weber County, sitting where the Wasatch Range meets the valley floor about 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. Incorporated as Ogden City in 1851, the city grew into a major railroad hub after the Union Pacific and Central Pacific lines met nearby — Ogden's Union Station, opened in 1924, once saw more than 100 trains a day, and the city is still nicknamed "Junction City" for that history. After a mid-century decline, Ogden rebuilt itself around outdoor recreation, technology, and advanced manufacturing, a turnaround the city traces partly to hosting three venues during the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Today Historic 25th Street anchors downtown with its Farmers Market and First Friday Art Stroll, the 9 Rails Creative District carries the city's arts scene, The Junction serves as its entertainment district, and Weber State University anchors the University District. Ogden calls itself a basecamp for the outdoors: Snowbasin, Nordic Valley, and Powder Mountain ski resorts all sit within 20 miles, Ogden Canyon leads up to Pineview Reservoir, and the city maintains Utah's only whitewater park downtown alongside 230+ miles of trails. Ogden's civic calendar includes Christmas Village's holiday lights each winter, the Historic 25th Street Farmers Market every Saturday from May through mid-September, the Ogden Music Festival, and Ogden Pioneer Days each summer. Ogden School District serves the city through two comprehensive high schools, Ogden High and Ben Lomond High.
