Welcome to St. George, Utah

St. George is the seat of Washington County in Utah's southwest corner, about an hour from Zion National Park and roughly 1.5 hours from Las Vegas. The city traces its founding to 1861, when around 309 pioneer families were called to the area as part of the LDS Church's "Cotton Mission" to grow cotton in the warm desert climate — the origin of the region's enduring nickname, "Utah's Dixie." St. George has been the Washington County seat since 1863. The city covers about 78.5 square miles of red-rock desert terrain, with neighborhoods including historic Downtown St. George, Bloomington, Little Valley, and the planned community of Sun River. Utah Tech University — founded in 1888 and known as Dixie State until a 2022 rename — is one of the city's oldest institutions and a major local employer, alongside the healthcare and tourism sectors that have made St. George one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country. St. George's civic calendar includes the St. George Marathon each October, the St. George Art Festival over Easter weekend (running since 1980), and Dixie Days, a mid-September heritage week with a rodeo, parade, and carnival. Public education is split across Washington County School District's Dixie, Desert Hills, and Snow Canyon high schools, each serving a different part of the city.
