Logan is the seat of Cache County, sitting at the foot of the nearly 10,000-foot Bear River Range in northern Utah's Cache Valley. Mormon pioneers first settled the area in the spring of 1859, and the city was incorporated in 1866 with Alvin Crockett as its first mayor. Utah State University was founded in Logan in 1888 by residents who wanted a university of their own; it opened as Utah Agricultural College in 1890 and today enrolls more than 28,000 students, spinning off businesses that the city says employ nearly 10,000 people. Logan Canyon, which the city describes as a 40-mile community park, leads up to 18-mile-long Bear Lake, and the Cache Valley around Logan is regarded as Utah's leading agricultural producer. Downtown's Center Street Historical District anchors the city alongside the Logan Tabernacle, the Logan LDS Temple, and the Cache Valley Center for the Arts. Logan City School District operates a single comprehensive high school, Logan High, home of the Grizzlies.
