About Layton
Welcome to Layton, Utah
Layton is the largest city in Davis County, first settled in April 1850 along Kays Creek by farmers Edward Phillips, John Hyrum Green, and William Kay. The area went through several names — Kays Ward, then Freedom, then Kaysville — before taking the name Layton in 1886, honoring early LDS bishop Christopher Layton. Layton split off from Kaysville as its own town in 1907 and formally incorporated in 1920. The construction of Hill Air Force Base beginning in 1940 reshaped Layton, drawing a wave of new workers and diversifying the city; the 400-unit Verdeland Park housing complex was built in 1943 to house them. Today's Layton includes historic "Little Scotland," settled predominantly by Scottish immigrants, alongside city institutions like the Heritage Museum of Layton and parks including Ellison Park, Layton Commons Park, and Legacy Park. Davis School District serves the city through two comprehensive high schools, Layton High (Lancers) and Northridge High (Knights). Layton's civic calendar runs through the summer: Liberty Days brings a parade and fireworks each July 4th, the Electric Light Parade lights up Pioneer Day (July 24) with illuminated, non-motorized floats, and Layton F.E.S.T. combines a farmers market with live music and food trucks on Friday evenings each summer.
