Early Learning Essentials (formerly Mountainland Head Start) has served children and families in Payson, Springville, and across Utah, Wasatch, and Juab Counties for over 45 years. The Payson Center at 587 W 400 S is a federally funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit that offers completely free preschool services to low-income children and children with disabilities ages 3–5, as well as Early Head Start for pregnant women and children from birth to age 3. Operating a part-day classroom model, classes meet four days per week for 3.5 hours per day, with 16–17 children per classroom. Enrolled children receive free school meals, comprehensive family development services, disability and mental health support, nutrition and health services, and access to the Waterford UPSTART at-home reading and math program. The program's developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive curriculum focuses on vocabulary, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and social-emotional readiness to ensure every child enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. With eligibility also extended to families experiencing homelessness, foster care, or receiving TANF or SSI, Early Learning Essentials is a vital community resource for Payson and surrounding areas.
