Cedar City

Cedar City is the seat of Iron County, sitting at the base of the Markagunt Plateau in southern Utah — the city's own site calls it the "Gateway to the Parks," within reach of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Brian Head Ski Resort. Founded November 11, 1851, when 36 men were sent by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build a fort along Coal Creek — English, Irish, Scotch, and Welsh miners and iron manufacturers tasked with producing iron for territorial use — the city still marks November 11 as "Cedar City's Birthday." Today Cedar City accounts for roughly 65% of Iron County's population, with about 80% of county residents relying on it for services and employment. Southern Utah University, founded in 1897, anchors much of the city's identity and economy, alongside Southwest Technical College, which serves a four-county region. Cedar City calls itself "Festival City USA," a nickname built around the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival held each summer and fall on the SUU campus, alongside the Utah Summer Games — the state's largest annual sports festival — and the Orchestra of Southern Utah's fall recital series. Iron County School District serves the city through two comprehensive high schools, Cedar High and Canyon View High.
